H. scabra is very dark species with scabrid, tubercled leaf surfaces. It is slowly growing species, some forms are offsetting, others remains solitary. It is very variable in size. (from 30 mm to 150 mm).
The form of the plants varies from having the leaves distinctly tiered, in either 3 or 5 vertical tiers, and either incurved or suberect and spreading. In some forms there are few leaves and plants are acaulescent, but in others with many leaves, the plants do have a shorty leafy stem.

H. scabraは、表面が粗い粒状になっており、ざらざらで鱗のような葉をして、非常に黒みがかった色の種です。子株ができるものもあればそうでないものもあり、生長は非常に遅いです。サイズは30ミリから150ミリまでとさまざま。
形は、段々に重なるもの、三段もしくは五段に階層化するもの、カーブを描くか直立して伸びるもの、と異なります。葉が少なく無茎のもの、また葉が多く短い茎を持つものとあります。
